HANNE HUKKELBERG EMBROIDERY

Earlier this year, iconic Norwegian artist Hanne Hukkelberg returned after five years of silence with ‘The Whip’, an innovative piece of high-def production that was swiftly followed by the sample collage of ‘IRL’. This month, the unparalleled creative serves up ‘Embroidery’, a song that was originally written for singer-songwriter Emilie Nicolas (who also features on the track) and acts as homage to their similarity as artists and friends. As Hukkelberg furthers, “It’s about us, and our friendship; about how difficult it is to hold on to this profession and to be strong and patient in your music, and your work, and your life.” It’s that dedication to her craft that elevates songs like ‘Embroidery’ above the wealth of production work out there right now. It's a very physical song in which you can hear creaky floorboards upon which Hukkelberg lay while writing lyrics at home, her grandmother’s piano, vocal samples from 2012 track ‘My Devils’ and even the sound of the iron staircase in the Berlin apartment where the artist and fellow band member Mai Elise Solberg stayed while writing this song. The creative process that Hukkelberg takes us through is part opportunistic, part pure brilliance. It’s something the Oslo-based artist portrays in the opening verse of ‘Embroidery’, likening writing, recording and producing to need-and-thread work - “One stitch, two stitches, randomly put down all around [...] a pattern shows.” This track is another flooring addition to Hukkelberg's ever-nearing Trust LP. - HT
